Objective
A working definition of a conflict problem is proposed based on the works of Mitchell (1981), Klandermans (1997), Bartos (2002), and McAdam et al., (2001):
“A situation involving two or more people or organisations making claims on each other in which there are mutually incompatible goals and/or grievances. Resulting in conflict behaviour by at least one party aimed at the opposing party with the intention of making that opponent abandon or modify its goals or to express their hostility.”
This situation will be faced by most people and organisations, and being aware of the constituent elements of analysis will develop essential communication and conflict management and resolution skills.
